The Medical University of Plovdiv was established as a medical faculty of Plovdiv University in 1945. In 1950, the faculty became an independent institution known as the Medical Academy of Plovdiv. In 1972, it was renamed the Higher Medical Institute of Plovdiv. In 2002, following a decision by Bulgaria's National Assembly, the institution was given its current name, the Medical University of Plovdiv. The university has a diverse student body, with over 3,500 national and international students and more than 600 teachers and researchers. It offers undergraduate and graduate programs in Medicine, Dental Medicine, Pharmacy, Health Care Management, Nursing, and Midwifery, as well as postgraduate training and doctoral and specialist courses in various specialties.
Research is a priority at the Faculty of Medicine, with a focus on introducing new methods and innovative technologies in areas such as endoscopic surgery and microsurgery, imaging techniques, nuclear medicine, and radiotherapy, as well as the development of pharmacogenomics and personalized medicine. The academic staff at the faculty have a strong record of research, with 2241 publications, 1876 reports and posters presented at scientific forums, and 129 dissertations defended for obtaining a PhD degree during the period 2015-2019. The faculty also has 40 doctoral programs in medicine and 8 in biological sciences that have been accredited, providing support and resources for PhD students and young scientists to continue their research.
The Faculty of Medicine at the Medical University of Plovdiv is a well-respected educational and research center. It currently trains 2862 students in Bulgarian and English, with a curriculum that spans six years and includes preclinical and clinical disciplines, as well as a one-year clinical rotation. The faculty has 29 departments, including the recently established Department of Endocrinology, established in 2020. The faculty is committed to providing a high-quality education that meets modern standards for medical education, and it has experienced lecturers and modern infrastructure to support this. The faculty also has a diverse student body, with around 1721 foreign medical students from 47 countries across 5 continents.
